Most Americans, like ordinary people everywhere, don't relate to diplomacy -- to the extent they think about it at all, they view it as something that happens in a stratosphere of officialdom, far out of their reach. They also believe that it has little to do with their lives. They do relate, however, to other people's stories -- and diplomats have incredible stories to tell. While few dine with kings and queens, many more are targeted by terrorists, carjacked or exposed to severe pollution and epidemic diseases. Through it all, what they do around the world has a direct impact on our security, prosperity, health, privacy, ability to travel and much more.

This book contains the exact same material (literally verbatim) as Kralev's other book, America's Other Army, which is presented in a more thorough, better organized context. The book is a complete waste of time and money if you have read America's Other Army, and between the two, America's Other Army is much better.Product details

Diplomats in the Trenches Profiles of US Foreign Service Officers edition by Nicholas Kralev Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
It turns out diplomats are just people like all of us. I appreciated the diversity of diplomats profiled in this book in terms of ethnicity, gender, seniority, etc. Very well written and engaging.
Diplomacy may not be relatable, but this book is. It's just stories about people and how they deal with their personal, family and professional lives. We may not live in different countries every few years, but we deal with similar issues. Highly recommend!
It's great to see some of the faces of American diplomacy and learn more about the people who represent us around the world -- not the secretary of state or other high-level officials we see on TV, but the people who do the real work at our embassies. This is an important and enjoyable read.
