MILESTONE FOREVER #2 OF 2 Books

When Milestone first came out, when I was a kid, they didn't really catch my radar. I wasn't much into substance then(thought Icon was a knock-off superman and didn't want to take the time and see what he was about. I was wrong.) But after not reading comics and coming back after some years and reading Icon #1, I was impressed and wanted to see how his story ended or continued(depending on how you look at it). But I was sorely disappointed with the short wrap up of Milestone Forever that really left me wanting more, not in a good way. Prove me wrong DC (and I hope I am, b/c I don't read comics often), and tell me Icon lives on somewhere as a 3-dimensional character true to his origins and non-stereotypical, if not flawed, beliefs.
A lot of the story was about Static( a character I never liked. Sorry, but he always felt commercial.)
Never-the-less I sincerely respect what the creators at Milestone accomplished. As a black kid who aspired to be a comic artist at one time, they inspire me to this day in other endeavors. And the original Milestone Icon and Wise Son and Rocket and other characters were ahead of their time. Not like cheap, trite, shock-value characters that try to look "real" or "black" or "urban" or whatever. Try out those older Milestone stories. It's what I would do.

MILESTONE FOREVER #2 OF 2 Books Reviews

This issue concludes the story by the late co-creator of Milestone Media Dwayne McDuffie. It also is the story which allows DC Comics to integrate the Milestone characters into the DC Comics universe. I do not think this is a great idea, but DC probably thinks of Milestone as competition nowadays as well as an experiment that failed (DC was Milestone's distributor in the 1990s as a way for DC to publish comics for the severely underserved minority comic book fanbase). If you were a Milestone fan back in the day, then pick it up to complete your collection.
This is a classic for urban comic book collectors. This issue closes out the historic Milestone Universe with a well thought out story line.
This awesome sequel and climax to the existence of comicdom most hip-hop universe delivers from the first page and never stops. Fans can take sneak peek into the future of some of the main characters and enjoy a satisfying conclusion to one of the most successful urban comic book series since The Black Panther! Imagine a universe with black versions of Superman(Icon), Iron Man (Hardware)and let's not forget the mega watt teen with swagger to match, Static! Milestone and Dwayne McDuffie, you both will be sorely missed amongst comic books fans! However you both will live on in our hearts forever!
This review covers both issues 1 & 2 of the two-part series.

Milestone Forever is published in two prestige format issues. The 2010 series revisits the primary superheroes of Milestone Comics' Dakota City, last seen in a 2009 Justice League crossover arc published by DC comics. The heroes last appeared in their own titles and universe in the late 90s.

The primary characters featured in this redeux are Icon, Rocket, Hardware, Static, and the Blood Syndicate. It is not clear how much time has supposedly passed between this series and the individual titles from the 90s. However, Milestone Forever seems to be written as a lead-in to the previously-mentioned 2009 crossover with the DC Universe. It also functions to connect the loose ends and unfinished storylines left hanging after the cancellation of the initial Milestone titles.

As the story opens, we learn that membership for the Blood Syndicate has expanded, and the questionable motives of their new leader put them on shaky ground with the rest of the Dakota City heroes. We learn that Hardware now owns the company that he spent much of his career trying to bring down. Static is an adult, married with two kids. Rocket's grandmother has passed on. We also learn that the mysterious Dharma fears the approach of some possible unseen disaster.

These two issues are not heavy on action. There's a minor scuffle between the new Blood Syndicate and Dakota heroes Icon, Rocket, Hardware, Static, and Wise Son. There's also a scuffle (told in flashback) between a young adult Static and some super-powered racist not shy about dropping the N-bomb and a couple other derogatory terms. It seems that these issues exist simply to bridge the gap between these characters' last appearances in the 90s and their re-appearance in the DC Universe proper. Although McDuffie's initial runs with these characters exhibited a wealth of wit and character, these two issues quickly glaze over the various key characters of the Milestone Universe just to give the reader a quickly glimpse of where they are now. In my opinion, Hardware's scenario seemed to be the most interesting.

This miniseries was not nearly as exciting or phenomenal as the initial runs of the Milestone titles, but it does serve as a decent snapshot of heroes regarded as obscure by many readers of mainstream comics. Although the heroes were absorbed into the DC Universe proper, they have not appeared outside of the previously-mentioned crossover arc.

Static, the most commercially successful character from the Milestone Universe, does currently appear in the ongoing title Static Shock, written by John Rozum and drawn by Scott McDaniel, part of The New 52--DC's revamped comic universe.
