As always Ms. Singh writes a story that makes me fall in love with the Psy-Changeling series all over again.
Whisper of Sin is a prequel to the series. This book happens before Lucas, before Clay, before Dorian, before Judd (who is my favorite), before Hawke and before Kaleb. It was nice to get back to the beginning for me. I have been obsessed with the series since book one. Emmett and Ria’s story is sweet, spicy and quick. It was a lot of fun to see how these two got together. It was great to see some of the other characters too before we know them so closely.
If you are a fan of Ms. Singh’s series and you have not picked up this story you need too. If you are new to this series now is a perfect time to pick up a copy of Whisper of Sin and learn why I love this series so much.

I always love finding out about the pack members who are already mated and Emmett and Ria are no exception. When a gang tries to move into San Francisco and take over China Town, They threaten merchants trying to get "protection" money, Ria is attacked by a gang member when she is returning home from night school. She defends herself and is rescued by Dorian from the DarkRiver pack. Emmett comes in to determine what has happened and when he sees Ria, he knows she is his mate.

I love this story, DarkRiver is just getting off the ground and they cannot allow a gang to move in on them or they will be attacked by other predatory groups. The story is a blend of the pack history and Ria's and Emmett's story and as always its well written and moves the world building forward.

Ria's family is wonderful but her grandmother is the guiding force in her life and theirs. This was like getting a small special gift from someone you like that you don't expect. Lovely and delicious.
I am a huge fan of Nalini Singh's Psy/Changeling novels and this installment did not disappoint me. Whisper of Sin was originally released in 2010 in a collection of stories titled Burning Up. Whisper of Sin is a novella about Emmett, a leopard sentinel in the DarkRiver pack and Ria, a human who is the administrative assistant to Lucas Hunter, DarkRiver's alpha. This is the story about how these two met and fell in love. I would have liked it if this was a full length novel, but I say this about most novella I read. I really hope you take the time to read all of the Psy/Changeling novels, beginning with Slave to Sensation.
I love Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series and one of my favorite parts is all the novellas that are written to help build the world. Fans of the books have met Lucas's human assistant, Ria, and her Changeling husband, Emmett, since the beginning so it was great to see how their story began. While I do wish (like with most of the short stories in this series) that there was more to the story, I found this to be enjoyable and definitely worth the time.

Ria is a human who is threatened by gang that is trying to establish dominance in the city of San Francisco. She is rescued by a group of Changelings who are part of the DarkRiver pack which claims San Francisco as its to protect from all outsiders. One member of this group becomes intrigued by Ria's tenacity and that is loyal soldier, Emmett, who spends much of his time training the teenagers of the pack.

Like in most books of this series, I fell in love with both Ria and Emmett from the beginning. Nalini Singh is amazing at creating strong females and sexy heroes who appreciate them. Ria is definitely in a transition period in her life and I enjoyed watching her gain confidence with Emmett's supporting her the entire way. Emmett is like most shifters in that he falls for Ria quickly which would normally annoy me in other genres, but it just works in paranormal romance. These two have great chemistry and are just adorable together.

Another part that I enjoyed of Whisper of Sin is the depiction of Ria's family. Paranormals don't always spend time on characters' families unless there is some tragedy involved. But, Ria is lucky enough to have supportive parents and siblings along with a crackerjack of a grandmother. I loved every scene with Ria and her family which also correlated well with the closeness of the DarkRiver pack.

In conclusion, I thought this novella provided great insight into the Psy-Changeling series and would be a nice way to introduce the world, and the author's style, to new readers. I definitely recommend it for Singh newbies and long-time fans!
THE STORY Ria Wembly is attacked. She is saved by leopard shapeshifters known as changlings. Emmett is a leopard changeling and he immediately knows that Ria is important to him. He is determined to find out who is trying to hurt Ria and to eliminate that threat. Emmett is possessive and dominating and Ria lives with a family that has tried to control her for too long. Can she deal with Emmett?

OPINION I liked this novella. Singh has created an interesting world and set of characters and I look forward to reading the actual novels in the series. The story between Ria and Emmett is fast and intense. I really enjoyed the glimpses into her family who are a unique bunch. I recommend this novella whether or not you have read the other books in the series.

WORTH MENTIONING I read this book before any of the major novels in the series. While I suspect that there are lots of cameos by characters that appear in the series, I did not feel that I had missed anything. I understood what was happening in the story.

FINAL DECISION I enjoyed this story and can't wait to read the full length novels in the series.

CONNECTED BOOKS This novella is 0.6 of the Psy-Changeling series.
